Hall closet makeover

February 27, 2014

Sarah from Sarah Hearts is taking over the blog today while I’m on a brief maternity break!

Do you ever put off things for a really long time? I’m slightly embarrassed to say I put off painting our hallway for not just months but years!

After moving into our home nearly four years ago, we’ve painted every room in the house with the exception of the hallway and the kitchen area. We’re content with the kitchen paint color, but we’ve always loathed the hallway color. It’s already a dark space, and the dark khaki color was making the space appear even narrower.

So finally after much procrastination, I decided to paint the hallway and the open shelving in the hall closet. It did take longer than I anticipated (four days) but I’m so happy with the results.

The previous owners removed the accordion doors on one of the hallway closets and installed wooden shelves inside. Since our home doesn’t have a linen closet, this space has served as one. The open shelving forces us to keep things tidy since there aren’t doors we can hide the clutter behind. I love how it adds a little bit of character to an otherwise pretty boring space in our home. I purchased the baskets right after we moved in from both World Market and Target.

To help keep everything in the right place, I repurposed some of my old Moo luxe business cards (that had my old social media handle on them) into chalkboard labels. I started by using my 1/8″ hole punch to create small holes on either end of the cards, then I used a foam brush to apply chalkboard paint to one side of the cards. It took 4 coats of paint to completely cover the card stock.

Once they were dry, I used a white chalkboard marker to write the contents of each basket on each card. Then I used some white cotton string to attach the labels onto each basket. Now if I decide to move things around all I have to do is wipe off the label with a damp towel and I write the new contents on the label.

(If you don’t want to make your own chalkboard labels, Target now sells baskets with chalkboard labels on them.)

What a beautiful idea. I only wish my closet was large enough to do this!

This is great, my boyfriend and I are moving into a loft with zero closet space, this might be a great idea!
