Family Halloween Costume Ideas

October 23, 2014

family halloween costumeDo you dress up with your kids on Halloween? I might throw on a jeweled masquerade eye mask or plastic tiara. One day, though, I’d love to be the type of mom who goes all out and makes a family Halloween costume for us to wear together.

It would become a yearly tradition. We’d brainstorm costume ideas as a family, then wear our handmade creations while trick-or-treating around the neighborhood and attending Halloween parties with all of our (costumed) best friends and their young children.

Doesn’t that sound idyllic? Of course, first I’d need to learn how to sew.

family halloween costumefamily halloween costumeIf you’re looking for last-minute family Halloween costumes (and you know how to sew), you must check out Katie’s amazing DIY tutorials on A Beautiful Mess. This year, Katie chose a Pinocchio-themed costume for her family. She’ll be the Blue Fairy, her husband will be Geppetto, and her two daughters will dress up as Pinocchio and Figaro the cat.

Last year, her family went as Peter Pan and the Lost Boys. They all look cozy and adorable! And the previous year they went as Goldilocks and the Three Bears, complete with oversized paper mache bear heads. Super cool but kind of frightening at the same time, right? I can’t believe Katie’s youngest daughter, little Goldilocks, wasn’t scared of her parents and sister!

You can find all three family Halloween costume tutorials on A Beautiful Mess. And then hop over to Katie’s blog, Skunkboy, for more photos of her beautiful family.

Have you ever dressed up as a family for Halloween? Is it something you could see yourself doing in the future?

PS – A glow-in-the-dark toddler costume and historical costumes for girls.

these are so cute! But I would be totally terrified of the three bears. Last year the work girls all went as the band Kiss which was quite fun, albeit using a huge amount of black eyeliner!

That sounds like fun! I’ve always enjoyed seeing friends in group costumes for Halloween — especially when you can tell that a lot of thought and planning went into it. What will you be dressing up as this year?

Gavin told us he wanted to be a chef, so we designed the “family” costumes around him. Lilla will be a cupcake and Adam and I as waiters…. Couldn’t pull the trigger on the lobster costume at full price, maybe for next year!

So cute! Will you be wearing the costumes to a party or just for trick or treating? Also, I love that Gavin wanted to be a chef. Hooray for little boys who like to cook!

This is only my son’s second Halloween. Last year, he was the white rabbit and I was the Cheshire Cat. His teddy bears were dressed as Alice and the Mad Hatter.

This year, we are dressed up as a family of Pirates. Daddy, Mommy, and baby. 🙂

Last year, my mom made his costumes. My costume was bought.
This year, all of our costumes were bought (and look quite cute!)

Such cute costume ideas. I especially love that your son’s teddy bears dressed up, too.
