A Girl Named PJ

Style: denim shirt and patterned skirt

August 26, 2012

denim skirt with paisley skirt

As somebody who has a hard time defining her style (but who still loves fashion), my eyes widen when I see a head-to-toe look I would want to wear. I recently came across the above photo and was so inspired by the denim shirt and floral skirt combination that I started tracking down similar pieces to see if I could recreate the outfit.

Now, I know I don’t normally do fashion posts on Bunny & Dolly, but I hope you’ll let me indulge my inner sartorialist just this once! (Or maybe more often. You’ll have to let me know what you think!)

PSA: catbird stacking ring sale

August 16, 2012

catbird anatomy of a stack

Consider this is a public service announcement!

Get thee to Catbird’s website today or tomorrow to take advantage of their stacking ring sale. I’m obsessed with the look of stacking rings, especially the stack in the above photo. If those black diamonds were rubies (Levi’s birthstone), I would definitely snag one and use it as the foundation of my stack. And by snag one, I really mean that I’d put it on my wishlist and daydream about it while saving up my pennies.

I’m also loving the rings with blue stones on Catbird’s sale page. Oh, how I wish they were aquamarine, which is my birthstone!

Note: This is not a sponsored post! I just really like Catbird’s jewelry.

7 Summer Shoes for Baby Boys

June 14, 2012

During the winter, Levi practically lived in his Robeez. Although they were slip-on shoes, he couldn’t pull them off like he did his socks. Now that we’re having 90-degree weather, Levi often goes barefoot, which is fine since he isn’t standing or walking yet.

If I remember to grab them from his drawer, I’ll slip on his Carter’s velcro fisherman sandals, which have received a surprising amount of compliments for being such inexpensive shoes. We have a pair of Boumy moccasins in his closet that are still too big, and I’ve got my eyes on a pair of Native sneakers that I hear are the next big thing in kids’ shoes.

Here are my summer shoe picks for infant boys (from top to bottom): Crocs Kids ‘Crocband II’ in Sea Blue/Lime;  Vans Kids ‘Checkerboard’ Classic Slip-On; Native Kids Shoes ‘Miller’; Carter’s Fisherman Sandals Pre-Walker; Tiny TOMS Classics; Robeez ‘Touch & Feel’ Chameleon Slip-On; Boumy Moccasin in Sand.

Which do you like best?

swimsuits for the baby pool

June 5, 2012

The last bathing suit I purchased was an itsy-bitsy black bikini from Old Navy two years ago, so I decided this past weekend that it was time to update my poolside wardrobe. As I plan to spend most of the summer in the baby pool with Levi, I had three very specific criteria for a new swimsuit:

  1. No strings that could be accidentally untied by grabby baby hands
  2. Not too skimpy (I’ve still got some post-baby jiggle to conceal)
  3. Reasonably priced

Besides jeans, I’m not sure there’s anything more traumatizing to one’s self esteem than shopping for a bathing suit. I tried on countless swimsuits at a local department store, only to leave empty handed and depressed. In a sea of one-pieces, bikinis and tankinis, I couldn’t find any that met my requirements.

And I’m honestly not sure which experience was worse–viewing my reflection in the dressing room mirror or realizing that the average price of a swimsuit was $115. Ugh. Maybe I should be feeling thankful rather than disheartened that nothing I tried on fit properly.

So I took my search to the internet. Specifically, to J. Crew. (Did you know that they’re no longer selling swimwear in their brick-and-mortar stores?) I found a handful of mom-approved swimsuits that seem to meet my criteria. My only problem is that I have no idea what size I wear in J. Crew one-pieces and bikinis, so I have to order each in two different sizes. Luckily, J. Crew is offering free shipping and free returns on all swim styles all summer!

These are a couple of my faves (clockwise): Polka-dot ruched underwire tank // Caspian paisley bandeau tank // Liberty underwire top // Antique paisley triangle top

Sparkly sequin dresses for New Year’s Eve

December 29, 2011

Vince sequin-embellished crepe dress // Oscar de la Renta feather-trimmed silk-mesh dress // Rachel Gilbert Shayla sequined tulle gown

I will most likely be wearing my pajamas, curled up with JB on the couch or in our bed to watch the ball drop this year. Still, a new mom can dream about lavish New Year’s Eve parties and sparkly sequin dresses. I love these three embellished looks from NET-A-PORTER.

What are your big plans for New Year’s Eve…and more importantly, what are you going to wear?!

PS – How to sparkle in glitter and sequins for New Year’s Eve!

my wishlist

December 27, 2011

Happy Chrismahanukwanzakah! What presents did you have the most fun giving this year, and what were you the most excited to get?

In addition to some really thoughtful gifts, I received a bit of cash for Chanukah. Rather than deposit it all into my savings account like I usually do, I may put some of my gelt (actual currency, not chocolate coins) towards one or more of these items still on my wishlist:

Michelle Armas calendar // Schosha circle ring (Ruby is Levi’s birthstone) // butter All Hail the Queen nail lacquer // DwellStudio Chelsea Stripe pillow // Hot Tools curling iron

Jon Stewart Onesie

Freshman year of college I met Jon Stewart at a book signing event, and I’ve been a fan ever since. I’m sure baby boy will be too.

it’s positive

November 7, 2010

before taking the e.p.t.

a positive e.p.t. test

On November 5th, JB and I bought a home pregnancy test at Walgreens with a $5 off coupon.

We both knew what the result would be before I even peed on the e.p.t. stick.

Starting in the middle of October, I began waking up in the middle of the night with terrible anxiety, unable to go back to sleep. Once I even ran to the toilet, convinced I was going to throw up. My first thought was that I was having morning sickness… but in the middle of the night? I was also convinced that I could feel something going on down there, a cramping on my lower right side. And then there was the bloating and feeling fat.

But this was the first month we had tried to get pregnant. JB had only returned home from his deployment at the end of September. Didn’t it take at least three months to conceive?

Apparently not.

The test was positive.

The plus sign appeared almost instantaneously. No need to wait the full two minutes.

I was really, really, really pregnant.

JB got teary-eyed. He couldn’t stop smiling. I couldn’t stop saying, “I’m totally freaking out! I’m totally freaking out!” He was so happy, and I was so overwhelmed with emotions. Fear. Disbelief. Joy. I knew from that moment that everything was going to change. Was I ready?
