Pacifier Nicknames & Some Friday Links

November 9, 2012

At the library this week, I stumbled upon the book Binky by Leslie Patricelli in the children’s stacks and began to read it to Levi — only I changed the word “binky” to “sucky” because that’s what we call it. Of all the pacifier nicknames we tried when Levi was born, including binky and paci and nuk, somehow sucky is the one that stuck. Isn’t that a strange pet name for a pacifier? I’ll admit that I sometimes feel silly referring to his pacifier as a sucky when we’re out in public, but I guess it could be worse. (Not really.)

Do you have a nickname for your child’s pacifier?

Here are a few things that caught my attention this week:

Get 10 free holiday cards from Tiny Prints (a $24.00 value) through Tuesday, November 13th.

Goodnight Moon is now an interactive app!

I’m a sucker for lists of drugstore beauty buys. Surprisingly, I don’t use any of these products…yet.

Did you watch election night coverage? I bit my fingernails and binged on leftover Halloween candy until Romney conceded and Obama finally delivered his acceptance speech (although I may have fallen asleep for a few minutes towards the end of it).

Instagram web profiles are here!

Occupy Sandy created an Amazon registry of the supplies that are needed the most in areas hit hardest by last week’s hurricane.

Supposedly this cult-favorite lipstick (now with gloss!) looks good on everybody. Have you tried it?

The Land of Nod’s pop-up toy shop opens today in NYC! I so wish I could go because I”m a huge fan of the brand. Somebody please go check it out for me!

Have a happy weekend!

My husband is Scottish, so we use the British word for it: dummy, and my 16 month-old girl calls it a “dum-dum,” which actually sounds like, “un-dum”. I used to live in France and Belgium, and they have different words for it. I can’t remember which is which, but one of them call it a “tetine”

Thanks for commenting, Francie! I actually think dum-dum is an adorable nickname for a pacifier. Makes me think of the little lollipops, and since they are also sucked on, it’s kind of appropriate!

For Sky, it was always a binky or “bink” for short. Taking it away was one of the hardest things I’ve EVER done – he was 2.5. I’m LOVING that list of drug store beauty finds, I need to try some of them! That gloss does look universal…hmm, maybe i’ll put it on my Christmas list. 🙂

Hi, Emily! I felt funny when I tried calling Levi’s pacifier a binky, but I really like “bink” as an alternative. Unfortunately, I think we’re stuck with sucky…at least until there’s a baby #2!

Hehe, we call E’s her “sucky thing” (she says “suthing”) cos we didn’t like any of the names that float around. Friends called theirs a “bubble” and another friend from Germany called it a “hapi” which was the old word for it in the village she grew up in.

You’ve got me thinking, Manda…I wonder how Levi will pronounce “sucky” when he starts to talk. Uh-oh!

My family calls it a “cork”. Like, “Stick a cork in it!” hahaha

Haha, sometimes we refer to it as a plug — same idea!

Sometimes we refer to is as plug, too. Actually, we say, “Can you put a plug in it?!”

Day 12 | No photos from today (well none worth sharing) because I sat in front of my laptop from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. working on deadline. My busy work day also meant that my kids didnt get very much of my attention. My husband kept them occupied for some of the day but I dont think they got any schoolwork done. Not sad about anything specific. Just ... sad. Cabin fever? Exhaustion? We decided to get out of the house to look at the cherry blossoms in Bethesda. The Kenwood neighborhood was quiet so we parked and walked down a side street keeping our distance from the few other people out and about.
