The O.G. by Lo and Sons: the best bag for planes, trains and automobiles
Around the time I was starting to get bored with the diaper bag I had been carrying for the past year, the generous folk over at Lo & Sons sent me one of their O.G. bags last month to try out. With an abundance of interior and exterior pockets and a water-resistant nylon construction, the O.G. seemed to meet my diaper bag requirements: fashionable and functional.
So what did I think of the bag in real life?
24 hours in Minneapolis
For those of you who follow along on Facebook or Instagram, you might have already guessed that my little family of three took an impromptu road trip to Minneapolis this weekend. This was our first time driving such a long distance with Levi, and it was terrible. Because of all the bathroom and snack breaks we needed to take, each 5.5 hour leg took nearly 7 hours, and Levi did not nap going either way. He’d start to doze but would wake himself up almost immediately and begin whining and crying.
Eventually, I moved to the back seat (on the hump–the worst seat in an SUV!) to try to soothe him. But since he was mostly uncomfortable in his car seat and just really overtired, there was little I could do except suffer along with him. (What was JB doing? Listening to his Game of Thrones audio book while driving. Lucky guy.)
Although we were desperate for a change of scenery after these last few stressful weeks, our primary reason for traveling to Minneapolis was to shop at IKEA. Specifically, we were looking for toy storage for our living room and basement, as well as inexpensive organizational and home decor items. To make our 24-hour visit feel more like a romantic getaway, we booked a (surprisingly) affordable suite at the super swanky The Hotel Minneapolis. (It used to be a bank!) We wanted to set up Levi’s pack-n-play in a separate room so that we wouldn’t be forced to go to bed when he did, but what really cinched the deal was the photo of an amazing soaking tub on the hotel’s website next to the description of the room.
Well, imagine my disappointment when we learned upon arrival that the photo was actually of the hotel’s Presidential Suite and that our room didn’t have a tub at all. No tub! Super bummed, we suggested to the front desk that they update their website, and they compensated us with a free breakfast. I would have rather eaten IKEA’s $1.99 breakfast and been moved to the Presidential Suite, but the hotel manager did not seem inclined to kick out the bride and groom already staying in it.
Despite been a pill in the car, Levi was mostly a good sport while we were out and about. (I felt like such a bad mother for completely ignoring his nap and bedtime schedule, though.) He discovered two new skills: making quasi-fish faces and drinking out of straw. At the suggestion of some of my Twitter friends, we ate our one meal out at Convention Grill in Edina, chowing down on chicken noodle soup, hamburgers, french fries and a hot fudge malt. I was so stuffed that I didn’t even want to order something sweet from room service back at the hotel, and I never turn down dessert!
Oh! And Levi learned one another new trick: How to tear out the flaps from his lift-the-flap books. JB says that it must be a “boy thing” because, he claims, boys are more destructive than girls. *SIGH*
I’m sure I’m not alone in feeling like I need a vacation after my “vacation.” But there’s probably no such thing as having a relaxing vacation when traveling with kids, right?
Weekend links
Did you watch the Opening Ceremony of the Olympics last night? Although I enjoyed the performances directed by Danny Boyle, I have to admit that the spectacle put on by Beijing four years ago was, well, a bit more spectacular. What did you think?
When you aren’t glued to your TV set watching the Olympic games, why don’t you take some time to visit these interesting links from around the web this week:
I’ll take my Hibiscus Cooler with alcohol, please!
Another refreshing recipe: Honeydew-lime popsicles
A beautiful post on perfectionism. Can you relate? I can.
Sleeping with a nightlight may be making you depressed
A bunch of my Facebook friends are reading this book – have you heard of it?
Loving these toddler-size vintage Olympic t-shirts (I may also have to get one for me!)

an ideal bookshelf + friday favorites
Thank you to everyone who recommended additional parenting books on the blog and on Twitter. I will definitely add your suggestions to my list of must-reads. Now I just need to find some quiet time to sit and start reading!
While we’re on the subject of books, how charming are these colorful Ideal Bookshelf prints featuring children’s books? Framed, they’d be perfect to hang in a nursery or playroom. Artist Jane Mount also does custom work and will paint your favorite adult books, from travel guides and cookbooks to memoirs and fiction.
How many of your little one’s beloved books can you identify in these prints? (I spy at least seven that are in constant rotation at our house.)
Here are some of my favorite posts from around the web:

What to know about raising a boy
I’d like to travel back in time and be a guest in this Palm Springs house
An indestructible “lifeproof” iPhone case? (but not as cute as these printed J. Crew cases!)
I’m so inspired by the beautiful and creative life of this mom/photographer/writer
I may have done a little bit of damage at the semi-annual Anthropologie clearance sale
Must remember to buy tickets to this tomorrow!
Have a wonderful weekend, friends! Levi and I are very much looking forward to tomorrow…
hamsters holding hands
Before my family got our first dog, my parents let me and my sister have pet hamsters. Now I cringe at the thought of keeping rodents as pets, but they were all the rage in the mid-80s. I chose two of my favorite names for my pair of hamsters, Ricki and Renee. (I went to day camp with a girl named Ricki, and Renee was the name of my first babysitter.) My sister probably called hers Hammy or Fluffy, names more appropriate for a pet hamster.
I may have outgrown my affection for those little critters, but I think we can all agree that cartoon hamsters (and even squirrels, for that matter) are pretty darn adorable. That’s why I have the board book Hamsters Holding Hands on my wish list for Levi’s ever-growing library. Little ones can count to ten with playful hamsters rendered in cheery citrus hues:
One hamster wants to play
Two hamsters shout hurray
Three hamsters with a pear
Four hamsters in the air

me…jane by patrick mcdonnell
Did anybody catch Dr. Jane Goodall on “The Daily Show” earlier this week? The renowned primatologist was on the show to promote Disney’s new movie, “Chimpanzees.” Um, how adorable is that trailer?
I’m always amazed when I stop to think about Jane’s incredible life. She has basically lived the dream she imagined for herself when she was a young girl–to live with and help animals. Her adventures as a child with her stuffed chimpanzee, Jubilee, are the subject of an illustrated book called Me . . . Jane by Patrick McDonnell.
I think this sweet picture book, which is based on Jane Goodall’s autobiography, would make a lovely addition to a little one’s library, especially with Earth Day coming up this weekend!
getting in the easter spirit
I don’t celebrate Easter, but if I did…
I would totally whip up some Cadbury Creme Egg brownies or cupcakes…
dye (and stamp!) some colorful eggs…
and craft vintage-inspired bunny jars for all of my goodies!
How do you get into the Easter spirit?

one moment in time
I had Whitney Houston on my mind all weekend. Perhaps you did, too. As a child of the 80s, I feel strangely affected by the news of her death. She was only 48 years old when she died, so young, yet her death makes me feel old. How is it that another pop superstar I grew up listening to is dead?
Whitney Houston makes multiple appearances on the soundtrack of my childhood, right there alongside Debbie Gibson and Bryan Adams. I remember listening to her self-titled debut album at my friend Jodi’s house when I was just five years old. We would belt out “Greatest Love Of All” in her living room. Later, Whitney’s rendition of “I Will Always Love You” was the song all the girls in my class wanted to dance to at Bar Mitzvahs with the boys we had crushes on.
Since Saturday evening, Whitney Houston’s greatest hits have been playing on a continuous loop in my head. I keep catching myself singing snippets of them out loud… “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” “I Get So Emotional,” and a fave of mine, “One Moment In Time.” I was mesmerized by this song when it debuted during the 1988 Summer Olympics, and it still gives me chills to listen to it.
I know I don’t normally post about current events and pop culture, but Whitney Houston’s tragic death felt too big for me not to mention on the blog. Did you listen to her music growing up? What was your favorite song?
