Friday Rewind

Here’s a look back at the week (and weekend!) that was…

We fed the dog (a job we take very seriously!).

We discovered the fantastic toddler-friendly playground at Metcalf Park.

We stopped to smell the tulips.

We attended part of an Omaha Stormchasers game (our first baseball game!) but were more interested in what was happening off the field than on (cornhole!).

We went to school with crazy, untamable hair, proving just how badly we need another haircut.

We enjoyed a water activity in the backyard on a warm spring day.

We discovered that window decals stick to almost anything, including the leather ottoman, the refrigerator, the dishwasher, and the front door.

We decided not to grow out our bangs (at least, not yet)!

The Neighborhood: Stranger Danger

I was helping Levi hang his jacket in his school cubby shortly after he began attending daycare when a classmate ran over and threw her arms around my legs. Surprised by the hug, I looked up the mother, whose name I didn’t even know, and gave a small, awkward laugh.

“I’m sorry,” the mom said. “My daughter would hug strangers in the supermarket if I didn’t have her strapped into a shopping cart. She’s just too friendly.”

Young children are notoriously outgoing and, like the little girl in Levi’s class, often equally sociable with people they know and don’t know, which is why it’s never too early to have a conversation about strangers and safety.

Basement makeover part 1: From man cave to playroom

I’m excited to share some home-related posts this month on Bunny & Dolly, starting with a project I first conceived back in December: a basement makeover! After months of thinking about the changes I wanted to make, I’m finally acting on my ideas. Finally!

With help from my friend Jessica McKay of Birdhouse Interiors, I’ll be transforming our man cave of a basement into a bright, modern, and family-friendly playroom.

Desktop Designs: Wallpaper for your devices

When the legendary fashion designer Lilly Pulitzer, best known for her tropical print dresses, passed away last month, my friend Joy shared this tweet:

I had never heard that quote before, but I instantly found meaning in it. Actually, I found it to have several meanings. On a superficial level, I interpret Lilly’s quote as instructions on how to dress: If your days are dark and dreary — if it’s overcast or rainy — wear something bright and cheerful.

Spring is a season of renewal and new beginnings. The grass is growing, flowers are blooming, and sunshine warms the air around us. A temperate spring day begs for color, from ladylike pastels to energetic neon. Yet when the weather is less than ideal, I find it hard to part with wintery shades of blue, black, grey, or brown. How about you?

I’ve always admired girls who flaunt florals in the snow and white jeans in the rain. (Although I do not approve of wearing open-toed shoes when it’s only 50-degrees outside!) Obviously, they are dressing for themselves, not for the weather. I should start doing the same.

On a deeper level, Lilly’s quote fills me with optimism: If your days feel dark and dreary — if you’re sad or depressed — have hope that tomorrow will offer you a fresh start. No matter how challenging today may be, tomorrow is a new beginning. There is comfort in knowing that change is on the horizon.
