Friday Rewind

May 31, 2013

Last week we went on a family vacation with my parents, sister, brother-in-law, and nephew. Here’s a look back at our week together in Hilton Head…

We were surprised to see rocking chairs outside the Savannah airport.

We stayed at this house in Sea Pines Plantation on Hilton Head.

We took family bike rides around the plantation…

…while towing Levi around in his bike trailer.

 We snuggled with Cousin Max.

We relaxed by the pool.

 We enjoyed local fare.

We built sandcastles sand mounds on the beach.

We played with mommy’s accessories and an ear thermometer.

We not-so-patiently waited to be seated at A Lowcountry Backyard Restaurant (but it was SO worth it!).

Not pictured: We watched several episodes of Arrested Development on Netflix every night in anticipation of the premiere of season 4. (Well, my brother-in-law and I did. Everybody else eventually fell asleep on the couch!)

Backyard games

May 31, 2013

Have you ever played cornhole? Have you ever heard of cornhole?

Cornhole (also known as corn toss or bean bag toss) is a lawn game that, according to the American Cornhole Association, originated in Germany and was discovered in Kentucky over 100 years ago. It’s now a popular Midwestern outdoor activity, which is why I only learned about it a couple of years ago. Growing up in New Jersey, we had frisbees and horseshoes, but we didn’t have cornhole.

I pitched my first corn bag at a friend’s barbecue in Omaha a few summers ago. She had two cornhole platforms set up in her backyard, along with other new-to-me backyard games like ladder toss. Afterwards we bought a ladder toss set of our own but weren’t sure about investing in a large wooden cornhole set.

Fast forward several years: At an Omaha Storm Chasers game earlier this month, my Midwestern-born son discovered cornhole platforms inside Werner Park and had a blast dropping bags into the hole. Watching Levi devote his full attention to throwing those bean bags, I knew we needed some sort of cornhole set for our own backyard.

In the spirit of National Backyard Games Week, Wayfair sent over this bean bag toss game set for Levi. Naturally, Levi was solely interested in standing on top of the board and methodically organizing the bean bags in the own mesh pockets, but I tossed a couple bags from afar, aiming for the 25 point hole.

The verdict? Let’s just say the game is harder than it looks!

Cornhole… Ladder Toss… What are some of your favorite backyard games?

May 30, 2013

The Dolly Half-Dozen offers six tasty treats to nourish, inform, and entertain. On today’s menu…

- Only the mother of a little boy could come up with such a brilliant idea: Pleygo, the “Netflix of Legos” (via Daily Candy)

- “I need a drink!” is not an unfamiliar exclamation among my friends. So what’s the deal with moms using wine as a reward?

- Lately I’ve been thinking about unplugging. (Confession: I may have a small social media addiction.)

- My mom makes uh-mazing raspberry bars, but this recipe looks really tasty too.

- A professional shares six easy tips for photographing your child.

- Graphic designer Allie Lehman’s workspace is clean, modern, and practical.

Gemstone art

May 29, 2013

Like many women, I have an affinity for gemstones. I love them in earrings, necklaces, and rings, especially if they are aquamarine (my birthstone) or ruby (Levi’s birthstone).

I also love the look of raw, uncut gems, which is why for several months I’ve had Elisa Werbler’s Big Cartel shop bookmarked. Her hand-printed birthstone silkscreens have a modern yet natural vibe, each featuring five overlapping transparent layers to create the look of ten or more colors. At $110 for an unframed 11″x14″ print, they aren’t terribly expensive for original art, but I haven’t been willing to part with my cash just yet.*

Then I discovered Tabitha Brown’s amethyst wall art on, get this, The Land of Nod. Her 11″x14″ unframed print is even on sale now for $15.95, and while it lacks the 3-dimensional quality of Elisa’s gemstone art, I find the colors similarly appealing. (Tabitha’s Etsy store, The Pairabirds, offers a couple of different gem and rock prints, including aquamarine and emerald.)

Besides looking great in my newly-painted pink office, I think birthstone prints by either of these artists would make really lovely baby gifts. Couldn’t you see a new mom hanging up one in a nursery or playroom?

*At what point in my life will I not think that $100 is a lot of money? Is it because I’m cheap frugal? Oh, wouldn’t it be nice to be rich?

Free Father’s Day card from Treat

May 28, 2013

If you follow along with Bunny & Dolly on Instagram or Facebook, you probably figured out that I was on vacation last week. My family met up in Hilton Head, South Carolina for a week, and it was just the break from reality that I needed. The trouble is that now I’m having a difficult time getting back into the swing of things!

I’ll be here tomorrow with a home decor post, and I’ll share some photos from our trip in the Friday Rewind. But I wanted to drop in today to let you know about a sweet promotion: Treat is offering all new customers a FREE Father’s Day card.

Choose from nearly 500 Father’s Day designs and personalize a card for your pop (or your baby daddy) by adding photos, changing fonts, and choosing your own message. You can have the card shipped to you or have it mailed to the lucky recipient for the cost of a stamp.

I got JB a personalized Father’s Day card from Treat last year (which he loved), so I’m not eligible for a free card this year, but you should totally take advantage of this promotion! Psst… the deal ends tonight.
